Twentytú renews its commitment to sustainable tourism and was invited to the international conference of the Biosphere Responsible Tourism certificate, held on October 14 in the Portuguese town of Évora.

Under the title «Biosphere. A small but sustainable accommodation”, Ignasi Uñó, on behald of Twentytú, explained the priorities of our hostel from the sustainable and responsible side, as well as the respect for the environment tourism, the economic promotion of 22@ district and the social initiatives carried out.

Other speakers stressed the importance of having a tourist destination seal and the increasing of sustainable accommodations. They also approached the new challenges of responsible tourism in the Portuguese region of Alentejo and Ribatejo, that signed the compromise to become Biosphere Destination.

More than 250 people attended the event, including professionals from the tourism sector, hotel directors, representatives of Tourism of Portugal and the Secretary of State of the Government of Portugal, Ana Mendes.

Barcelona and Cataluña, sustainable tourism destinations

In the same way that Twentytú was the first hostel in the world with the Biosphere certification, Cataluña became the first Biosphere Destination as a whole.

Barcelona, Vall d’Aran and Sitges already have this certificate granted by the Responsible Tourism Institute, an organisation linked with UNESCO. During the sustainable tourism event in Évora, Sitges was the main focus in one of the conferences, where the city was presented as a case of success after obtaining the sustainable seal last June.

2017, Year of Sustainable Tourism

Furthermore, 2017 will be the International Year of Sustainable Tourism, with the aim to promote and create worldwide awareness about the importance of playing a responsible tourism.
