Otaku are already putting on their finery for the event of the year: the 22nd edition of the Barcelona Manga Fair. Comic legends, Youtubers, Cosplay, Japanese culture and many more surprises in a year that aims to beat all records achieved so far.
Barcelona Manga Fair became a must event for Manga lovers. Two days full of stands, presentations, gastronomy of the Land of the Rising Sun and lot of activities related with the Japanese culture. This year one of the main attractions will be the literature of Japan, a country where people read an average of 46 books a year! Furthermore, lot of mangas have been inspired in some of the books that you will be able to find in the space dedicated to the Japanese literary tradition “Spirit of Japan”, which will have as special guests the two famous Japanese narratives Banana Yoshimoto y Mitsuyo Kakuta.
Another major theme of this year is the exhibition «The Origins of Manga», where you can explore more than 1,000 years of Japanese art history. This background before the modern Manga comics is represented with comic strips, satire and representations of everyday stories from different eras.
Luxury guests and franchise
As every year, the fair has the best mangakas among its highlights. This year, after the Pokémon phenomenon, Hidenori Kusaka and Satoshi Yamammota, authors of the animation of the moment, could not be missed.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Pokémon, the Japanese authors are the guests of honour of this edition; they will join a master class, answer fans’ questions and sign books to those who win it in a raffle. Just remember that they will only accept books published by Norma Editorial.
Another of the Manga stars that will visit the fair is the provocative Toshio Maeda, an icon of hentai (pornographic Manga) that has always been fighting to bypass Japanese censorship with the well known creature tentacles that appear in his stories.
And also through the main door will enter Yo-Kai Watch, one of the Japanese franchises of the moment that is succeeding among children and adults. The Yo-Kai Watch universe invades Montjuic fair through different planned activities; flash mobs, gymkhana, projections and also an area specially designed for children.
Although the fair focuses on the Japanese Manga, there is also room for recognition for the Manga of our country. This year, the show will host the 7th edition of Manga Fair Awards that recognize the best works of Manga and anime published in Spain between 1st September 2015 and 31st August 2016. The voting is open, so if you haven’t participated yet you can do it through their website. Among the different categories we can find the best Manga Fanzine, the best anime series or movie or the best Shojo Manga, gender especially focused on girls.
This year the Fair wants to get bigger. Therefore, the organization wants to beat all records from previous years. This year, the otaku fair occupies 70,000 square meters (10,000 more than last year), expands its hours from nine to nine (except Tuesday, that it will close one hour before) and expects to surpass the record of visitors (137,000 last year).
